The leading theme of this project is the book called The Cinnamon Shops, a collection of short stories written by Bruno Schulz. The book sets a unique mood with baroque descriptions of the grotesque and surreal plot, which leads the reader through an immense of emotions. The stories suddenly transform from warm sensations to cold, unknown associations and contrariwise.

An overwhelming amount of impressions from a book inspired this project into very detailed and decorative illustrations with a multitude of elements. It is full of emotive figures, their attributes, and symbols from the stories. The set of colors in this design combines warm and cold tones to set a proper mood, as the book does.

Pictograms designed for chapter pages of the ebook version were based on the modular nature
of the illustrations. Hence the design of printed as well as digital versions of a book are visually consistent. The modules of the graphics were an inspiration for typographic experiments
to create characters associated with their surroundings.

This project was created for educational purposes at
Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań.
